The Ford Edge ST is a very appropriate use of the ST name. The Ford Edge Sport always took a bigger engine than it really needed and shoved it into the crossover to combine with flashy wheels and a sporty suspension for a great daily driver for those who needed a good daily driver but also wanted to love the feel behind the wheel.
And if that sounds like the Fiesta “Thank you Fusion for the 1.6 Turbo” ST and the Focus “Thank you Escape/Fusion/Edge for the 2.0 Turbo” ST then you see where I’m going.
TO put it another way - the Edge Sport was an ST before the ST badge got popular. So they’re correcting that mistake now and giving it the brand identity it needs to keep selling. I’ll bet money that the Fusion “Sport” either becomes the Fusion SHO or Fusion ST in a year or two.
tl;dr - The Edge Sport became the Edge ST and it always was this way, we just didn’t realize it yet. It isn’t a big deal. Get over yourself.

I could argue that they should’ve reserved the ST badge for manual cars and the Sport badge for autos. However, I’m sure that Ford is seeing FiST and FoST buyers outgrowing their cars and looking for family vehicles with some street cred.

Point of order. The 1.6 was in cars WAY before the Fusion. It came in the Fusion at the same time as the Fiesta ST. And in Fiesta tune, it was, as best as I know, only in the Fiesta.
But... your point is still valid. Just... you know... replace it with Volvo.

What other subcompact had the 1.6T before the Fiesta ST?
DItto compacts having the 2.0T before the Focus ST?
That’s my point - Ford followed the vintage muscle car formula of “Well if it made this car go quick, it’ll make a smaller car go fast”

It was in the S60/V60/V40 (with the V40 being the smallest of the group), And I suppose that technically it was in the C-Max as well (if wiki is to be trusted, but I had no idea until tonight).

I’m in the other boat. As soon as I knew I didn’t need a bigger car, I bought a FiST. LOL

Counterpoint - “Sport” is a name that means nothing. It isn’t a brandable word and most companies use it to mean “You gettin SHIT” instead of a high performance trim. ST conveys the message that these are very driver focused cars for the real world without being extreme.
If “ST” is what Ford uses to denote “Manual Only” then they might as well kill it now because that name won’t last much longer. The sales are barely high enough as-is.

Not trying to be pedantic, but if it comes off as such, I understand. *Ahem*
1.6T - the smallest car it was in was the V40.
2.0T - smallest car it was in was the S60/Fusion.
The Fiesta and Focus are both in a class below these cars. So the smallest vehicles you can find these motors in are the hot rods of the ST division.

The best kind of correct is technical. Pedant your heart out. You are in good company for it.

ST should imply driving enjoyment.
There’s nothing enjoyable about driving an Edge.
2/10 at least it isn’t just an appearance package badge (RS)...for now

I didn’t care for the Edge Sport or the Edge ST, result?
I guess you’re right though, it’s worthy enough.

the Edge Sport was an ST before the ST badge got popular.
I don’t remember which year it was, but there was an Edge Sport that tested slower than the base model. Big wheels are heavy and there was no change to the engine.

First year of the Edge Sport. And then they gave it the 3.7 and let you get the non oversized wheels. That sucker FLIES.

I know you weren’t asking, but why not 400hp?
The 3.0l in the MKZ shows that it fits and the thing is 4klbs. 500 pounds more than the same engine in the Fusion sport. If its only a sport in the Fusion and it weighs more ... doesn’t seem very ST like.

Ah, gotcha.
We had an SEL AWD Edge from the early years, it was fairly quick on it’s own. Problem was it felt very heavy and ponderous when you tried to stop or change directions.
I’m sure the new ST will be much more controlled, but it still is quite heavy.
